BTHF Safety Reminder

An Important Safety Reminder Regarding Borane-Tetrahydrofuran Complex (BTHF) was issued June 28, 2002 (and revised on December 5, 2002) in response to an incident at an industrial facility involving borane-tetrahydrofuran complex (BTHF) manufactured by Callery Chemical (a former division of MSA that was purchased by BASF Corporation in September 2003).  The incident involved a BTHF container that ruptured causing injuries to several employees as well as property damage.  Currently, the cause of this incident is unknown and we do not know the role BTHF played in the incident.  Callery manufactured and sold BTHF for over 10 years and the chemical is widely used. We are not aware of any similar incidents ever having occurred.

We believe this is an isolated case and that there is no reason to be concerned about similar problems with the safety or handling of BTHF or any other current Callery product when handled in accordance with Callery storage and handling procedures.  However, we recommend that those who work with BTHF review this safety reminder as well as the BTHF (1 molar) Material Safety Data Sheet, BTHF (2 molar) Material Safety Data Sheet, BTHF Product Label, and BTHF Data Sheet.
