Gas monitoring increases among contractors

Concrete equipment and construction workers showed a marked interest in MSA’s portable instruments while attending the huge World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada (Feb. 27 –March 2, 2001). This was due, in part, to their increased awareness and OSHA inspections focusing on hazardous gases.

Apparently, OSHA compliance inspectors are increasingly zeroing in on small crews of 1 to 2 workers as well as large construction companies. Besides confined spaces, OSHA checks for proper gas detection in trenches, foundations, sewers, below-ground work areas, and other areas where toxic gases and oxygen deficiencies might exist.

Many contractors have made gas detectors a prominent tool of their trade, as they become more acquainted with the hazards and proper use of gas detectors in the construction industry. They are taking gas detection and monitoring very seriously, beyond the need to satisfy OSHA inspectors, especially with regard to their employees’ safety. Many ask about oxygen deficiency and carbon monoxide.

MSA’s newly introduced Orion™ Multigas Monitor heads the list of helpful monitoring “tools” for contractors. Details about it, our MiniCO® Responder and Cricket® detectors, and our ELF® Pump with sampling accessories can be found in our Construction Catalog (see page 8 to order).
