You Gotta Bug 'Em!
Teaching safety habits to children

Adults spend a lot of time bugging children about safety. "Fasten your seat belt!" "Don't touch the stove!" "Watch where you're going!" "Don't play with fire!" You hear yourself echo your parents' admonitions.

As a company committed to workers' safety for 87 years, MSA recognizes that good safety habits start at a young age. To instill safety in the minds of children, MSA Safety Works® (our retail division) has started a "Be a Safety Bug" program with schools. While interacting with MSA's life-sized Safety Bug action hero, kids learn the importance of wearing bike helmets, plus safety glasses, hardhats, and other protective equipment that adults use. They find out about fire and home safety that the whole family should practice, then go home and "bug 'em," that is, "bug" their parents about safety.

"The rap song the Safety Bug sings really drives home how to be safe on a lot of levels," commented John Quinn, marketing manager of MSA Safety Works. "We emphasize the need to be safe and help kids develop life habits that support that goal. And by using the 'Bug 'em' approach, we're encouraging them to share what they've learned with their parents. Let's face it, it's hard to ignore your kid when he or she is talking about a subject like safety."

The program has been a hit with the schools. "The Safety Bug assembly had a great impact on our kids," remarked Lynn Bimonte, assistant principal of Our Lady of the Lourdes Elementary School in Miami, Florida. "When their parents picked them up after the presentation, they were still yelling 'Bug 'em.'"

Through the sharing of the Safety Bug curriculum nationwide and visits by the Safety Bug himself to previously selected cities, the "Be A Safety Bug" program will continue to create a "buzz" about being a bug for home safety throughout the 2001-2002 school year.
