Spotlight on Safety FiveStar contest winners

Gretchen Manning, left, and Kay Garcia from MSA present lucky customer Fritz Kin a “check” for $30,000 worth of MSA products.

FiveStar contest winner gets $30,000 in free instruments

Fritz Kin and Marathon Ashland Petroleum have 30,000 more reasons to continue using MSA’s quality safety equipment.

Kin, a safety manager with the Findlay, Ohio, company’s Terminal, Transport and Marine division, was the grand prize winner of $30,000 of free MSA products through our FiveStar Passport to Savings promotion.

The FiveStar promotion gave customers a $300 rebate (toward more products) with each FiveStar® Alarm they bought between September 15, 1999, and January 15, 2000. And, each purchase gave customers a chance to win the grand prize.

Kin, a satisfied MSA product user for more than a decade, said he ordered 76 FiveStar Alarms through MSA distributor Donley Safety because the gas monitors are so easy to use. Kin and his safety specialists like how quickly they can change the FiveStar’s sensors, record and download information, and get accurate gas level readings.

“The folks in the field really like the ease of calibration and calibration checks,” he said. “It’s menu-driven... so it’s pretty easy to use, once you’ve been through it once or twice.

“The instruments have always been very reliable for our application. The FiveStar Alarm works very well.”

Kin said the division uses FiveStar Alarms and other MSA products at 94 Marathon Ashland facilities to help protect its 1,300 workers by monitoring confined spaces and the air around storage tanks that hold their products until shipping.

Kin used the $300 rebates earned through the FiveStar promotion for infrared download kits and some MiniH2S® Responders. With so many quality MSA safety products to choose from, Kin, an industrial hygienist for 10 years before joining Marathon Ashland, hasn’t decided yet how to spend the $30,000 prize.

However, additional Responder® Alarms and MicroGard® Portable Alarms will likely be in the mix, he said.

“We’re pretty well covered on (MSA) accessories and other things at this point, but I’d like to get some more instruments into our fleet and upgrade the overall fleet of instruments,” Kin said.

Congratulations to Fritz Kin of Marathon Ashland Petroleum, our FiveStar Passport to Savings winner!
