Ha-Keem Stanton, an employee with Fluor Daniel, was doing some welding work
on a Jacksonville Electric Co. combustion turbine project in St. Johns River,
Florida, last November when misfortune struck.
The hose of a 110 psi air-driven impact wrench broke free from a work area
above him and whipped around wildly. A large metal attaching mechanism slammed
into Stantons face. Stanton was wearing MSA protective eyewear, which
took the brunt of the impact. While the glasses were bent one stem was
twisted about three inches above the other his only injuries were some
facial bruises and a slight headache. He took some Ibuprofen, got a new pair of
MSA Sierra protective eyewear, and finished his shift.
Ive always worn safety glasses, but I dont
think I would have gotten the same protection from a smaller, sporty brand that
I used to wear, Stanton said. I might have even lost an eye. So
from now on, Ill always wear my MSA glasses. And I strongly recommend
that others do the same.
Fluor Daniel awarded Stanton its Fluor Daniel Safety Cross, a
brass medallion presented to employees who survive life-threatening accidents,
because they were wearing safety equipment.
