MSA Self-Rescuers Save South African Miners

Amos Ziqubu, a veteran miner for the New Coal Company in Mpumalanga, South Africa, is one of 350,000 miners who mine gold, platinum, diamonds, and coal. While he concentrates on his work, in deep-level mining hundreds of feet below the earth’s surface, he counts on MSA’s safety equipment and protection.

MSA’s mining helmets and cap lamps give miners head protection and light while they work. A self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) provides air during emergency air shortages. Personal protection for daily and emergency use are never more crucial than in underground mining.

Most recently, MSA equipment saved 18 miners from near-certain death at a Mpumalanga gold mine when a fire filled their mining cavern with smoke. After donning their MSA 30/100 SCSRs, the miners escaped and returned to the welcome light above.

Amos and those 18 gold miners from Mpumalanga wear MSA safety gear on the job so they can go home after a hard day’s work – an idea that MSA Africa has been advocating for over 60 years.
