Callery Chemical receives 2002 Governor’s Award for Watershed Stewardship

The annual Governor’s Awards for Watershed Stewardship honor individuals and organizations engaged in safeguarding and enhancing our environment across Pennsylvania. Governor's Awards are among the most prestigious environmental awards in the United States.

This year, Callery Chemical Company, a division of MSA, received an award in the Watershed Demonstration, Education and Outreach category for educating the Evans City Community about the Breakneck Creek watershed through its annual Earth Day event.

More than just a fun festival and family event for area residents over the past six years, the Earth Day event features educational exhibits sponsored by area high schools, local emergency response groups, environmental awareness groups, DEP, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. A detailed map of the watershed supporting Breakneck Creek, developed by MSA, is also displayed, then shared with the local high school for use in groundwater protection classes.

As the single largest water user in the Evans City area, MSA understands and promotes the importance of water conservation to employees and community residents. According to Brett Bosley, general manager of Callery Chemical, “Businesses need to understand the local watershed in order to act as its steward. Our Earth Day celebration has introduced Callery Chemical to the Breakneck Creek watershed and allowed us to make business decisions in ways that preserve its quality."

MSA Evans City Operations employ over 400 people, who make safety equipment including respirators and gas masks, and specialty chemicals for pharmaceutical applications. For more information on the Governor’s Awards for Watershed Stewardship, visit www.state.pa.us, PA keyword Watershed Awards.
